Online news has now taken over in popularity from newspapers – at least in the USA.
But where America goes on the internet, history shows that the rest of the world tends to follow.
According to the Pew Research Centre the internet is now the third most popular news platform in the US behind local and national TV bulletins and ahead of printed news, which came in fourth.
The study found that new technology has made news more portable, personalised and participatory and found that more than a third of people now accessed news on their mobile phone.
However, the study also found that nearly three quarters of people felt that the amount of news and information from different sources had become overwhelming – putting the onus on providers and search engines to sort out what's useful from what is not.
