Firms building a website should be aware that adverts on the Internet will soon be subject to strict rules.
It has been announced that online ads and marketing will now come under the remit of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The new rules will apply to adverts and statements on a website that are intended to sell products or services.
Sites will have until the 1st March 2011 to comply.
That will include marketing statements on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
However the ASA says the rules will not apply to journalistic and editorial content, although direct requests for donations and fundraising will be affected.
Last year the ASA received over 3,500 complaints. Over half of the adverts were outside of its remit.
