How it works

If you want to earn money through your website, Google's AdSense application is a good place to start. It matches advertisements to your site's content and audience and, depending on the type of ad, you can earn money from clicks (how many people actually click on the ad) or impressions (how many times the ad appears on your page).

AdSense looks at the content of your website, and places ads on your pages that are relevant to your audience. You can customize the appearance of the ads so that they fit with the look of your site. Alternatively, you could choose to provide a Google search bar on your website, and earn money from any clicks on Google ads on the search results pages.

Getting AdSense

All you have to do to get AdSense on your site is fill out the application form. Once your application is approved, you can access your account, choose how you want the ads to appear, then copy and paste a block of HTML code into your website. Google has a huge advertiser base, so it can deliver ads for pretty much any business and for practically all types of content. However, you can also control what appears on your site: for example, the Competitive Ad Filter enables you to filter out anything you don't want appearing, such as adverts for competitors.

Payment

How you're paid depends on whether the advertisers have bid for their ads on a per-click or per-impression basis; therefore, you'll be paid for either valid clicks or impressions. How much you earn depends on a number of factors, but the main thing to know is that advertisers bid to appear on your site, and you receive a portion of what they pay.
